Analysis of magazine cover
Music magazine case-study

The history.

Vibe magazine is a popular music magazine which included information about music and entertainment that is issued out every other month with double covers and a larger online presence. The magazine started in 1993 by musician Quincy Jones and partnered with time Inc. to ensure that his magazine would launch.  The magazine was originally called Volume before The founding editor; Scott Paulson-Bryant gave it the name “vibe”. Both Quincy and time Inc. owned the magazine for 3 years until they sold it to Miller publishing but shortly after that Spin magazine bought it. Spin owned vibe magazine for several years until 2006 when it was bought by Wicks group.
The magazine in 2009, it  was announced that Vibe was ceasing publication immediately but Quincy jones stated that he would like to keep it alive online. After the shutting down of Vibe, Intermedia partners who were partners with Wicks group bought Vibe to resurrect the magazine. They added Uptown magazine vibes parent company, vibe holdings. Later on Vibe holdings merged with black book media, an arts and culture magazine, to form Vibe media in 2012. In 2013 it was announced that Vibe magazine and its online websites were sold to Spin media for an undisclosed sum.  Vibe was likely to shut down the printing of the magazine near the end of 2013.

The content

Vibe magazine is targeted at listeners to R&B, hip-hop and rap. The magazine features R&B and hip-hop artists, actors and other entertainers. It predominantly targets young, urban followers of hip-hop culture. Vibe has several things that are included in the magazine. The magazine devotes several pages to photo spreads displaying high-end designer clothing and sportswear by urban labels such as Roca wear and Fuba which also feature popular singers and artists. When the vibe advertises clothing brands they link them to hip-hop celebrities or they are created for hip-hop celebrities and they use popular singers to model their clothing, an example of this is the women’s clothing “apple bottoms” which was launched in2003 by the rap artist Nelly, Yomi martin and Ian Kelly.  The magazine includes reviews music and artist; it also contains a celebrity gossip column and also a page that includes up-coming artists. Vibe tries to make a consistent effort to feature models of all ethnicities in their pages.  The magazine featured a launch of “the best rappers alive tournament” in 2008.

This is an artist featured article. The articles goal is to drag in fans of Tinie Tempah. The magazine is specifically layed out how it is with a large picture of Tinie Tempah in bold and exclusive interview ! also in bold. This is put there specifically because it will draw people who know him in which is the main goal of the article. It is to inform fans of Tinie of his first interview. The large picture people would notice from a distance. The paragraphs to the right is layed out and written in a way that the readers would like. The article uses pull quotes to emphasis  important quotes that Tinie has said. The articles kicker also is written and punctuated in the way that the audience would understand and would read.  The design of the article uses large sans serif font for the title, subheading and the kicker. It also uses a color scheme of white and black. The white background and the black text. This would make it easier to notice and read. It also suits with the picture of Tinie Tempah. The article relates to its audience by writing and putting things that the reader would like such as the picture of Tinie and the subheading " His first interview after his incredible Brit success". This would interest the reader and is specifically put in a noticeable place  for readers to look at and be interested in. The housing style of the article is speaking in a tone that relates to Tinie such as the slang language and punctuation used.
This article type is an artist feature article. It relates to its audience by using the title "Rap-radar" which shows clearly who it is targeted for. The headline  "the most exiting people in music" is bold and in the center of the page which is in the middle of 2 black thick lines. This brings attention to what the article is about and is the main aim of the article. The article throughout emphasizes the color red. It is used on both pages. The name " Jay-z" is red and to the left is a large picture of him. On this article red is used to represent Jay-Z. The layout of this is a large picture and some captions to the left and a 2 row column on the right that has a large J to represent Jay-Z. It also has 2 drop caps H and T. The gutters between the columns make is easier to follow the article fluently. The article uses slang language in parts of the article. This helps to relate to the reader audience. The design of this uses bold letters for titles , a stylish font for titles as well and a red , black and white color scheme. This is shown all over the article. The title rap radar is the only part that draws away from the color scheme but this is so that you notice it easier. The article uses a lot  of quotes from  jay-z which would help the housing style of this article to relate to the audience its aimed for. The housing style is addressing the reader in a way that would relate to them. It is written like the reader would write too.

Initial ideas.

My initial ideas for a music magazine.

My initial idea for a music magazine is a :hip-hop, R&B and rap magazine that is aimed at teenagers age 15-19. It will include the latest songs and albums coming out and newly released. It will also include celebrity news of hip-hop artists and rap artists.  It will have double page spreads that have a celebrity layed out on the both and will include latest news and gossip about the specific celebrity.
